The purpose of our course is to investigate and interrogate the pedagogical practices of National Geographic, particularly its re/presentations of East Asia. The course is framed using an inquiry-based design centering the compelling question: What/how has National Geographic taught us about East Asia? Our inquiry over the next six weeks will be driven by the National Geographic magazine itself, but also supported by secondary sources to guide our “reading” of images, narratives, and historical contexts. Importantly, as we engage in these re/presentations, we are at once prompted to consider what may be missing. In other words, while we attempt to answer what National Geographic has taught us, we must reflect on what it did not. Specifically, how might our practices of looking help us see what is not captured in the stories published for more than a century?
